Mexico - Chasing Roosterfish from a Panga
I truly believe that the roosterfish is one of the most beautiful fish in the world. And I am equally convinced that catching one from a boat along the endless Mexican beaches is a unique experience, unlike anything else in fly fishing.
It's hard not to wonder why evolution decided to design such an extraordinary creature. The roosterfish is powerful, aggressive, unmistakable-and that dorsal fin... well, that crest alone is worth the price of the trip. It is iconic, dramatic, and impossible to forget once you've seen it in action.
This is physically demanding fishing. Standing on the bow of a panga, the traditional Mexican skiff, requires constant balance and focus. The boat moves, the sea moves, and you are always on edge, scanning the water and stripping line.
Then it happens. While stripping the fly, you suddenly see the rooster's crest appear out of nowhere, slicing through the surface as the fish charges your fly. Watching it chase your artificial at full speed is enough to make the legs shake-even for the most experienced anglers.
It's a mix of beauty and violence, elegance and raw power. An encounter that leaves a deep mark and perfectly captures why roosterfish hold such a special place in the dreams of fly anglers around the world.
