Guatemala - The Dream of a Sailfish on the Fly

The dream of catching a large pelagic fish on the fly kept me awake at night for years. Not so much because of the size, but because of the spectacular nature of the fight. A battle with a

sailfish was something I imagined as intense, explosive, and absolutely unforgettable. The fishing technique itself is quite complex and demands perfect timing and coordination. It starts by trolling hookless teasers, whose sole purpose is to attract the fish. When the sailfish appears in the spread, you can clearly see it using its bill to try to stun its prey. It is a powerful and

almost surreal sight that instantly raises the adrenaline level. At that exact moment, the teasers are pulled out of the water. The fish, suddenly deprived of its target, stays in the area searching for what has just disappeared. That is when everything happens. You need to be quick, precise, and a bit lucky, because the cast has to land exactly

where the fish is, at the perfect moment. I clearly remember when my fly touched the water. The sailfish charged the fly like a fury, with no

hesitation at all. The eat was immediate and violent, followed by an explosive run. The fight was absolutely insane: jumps, blistering speed, sudden changes of direction. Total focus, with no room for mistakes. Even today, thinking back on it, it remains one of the most intense and adrenaline-filled fishing experiences of my life-the realization of a dream I had been

chasing for years.
