Finland – The Land of a Thousand Lakes… and a Thousand Pike

They call it the land of a thousand lakes, but I can assure you it is also the land of a thousand pike. I have fished for pike extensively in Italy, and for a significant part of my life it was one of my greatest passions. Italy holds truly massive pike, and precisely for that reason I wanted to test my knowledge and experience in what I consider one of the best pike destinations in Europe: Finland.

Here’s the surprising part—you fish in the sea. Yes, in the sea. The Baltic Sea has an extremely low salinity, which allows freshwater and saltwater species to coexist. This unique environment creates extraordinary conditions for fly fishing for pike.

Pike fishing in Finland can be absolutely spectacular. Not only because the number of encounters can be incredibly high, but also because the fishing itself is often fast-paced, visual, and immensely fun. The setup is serious: 9-foot #10 rods, intermediate fly lines, and long days spent casting tight to reed beds where these predators lie in ambush, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

The fights are intense and unforgiving. Explosive takes, brutal runs, and sudden direction changes push both angler and equipment to the limit. This is fishing where nothing is overbuilt and every component is tested to its maximum.

Finland is a sensational destination for anyone looking for raw emotion—emotion measured in power, violence, and seven hundred teeth waiting on the other end of the line.
